Overview

The Lead Biomedical Engineer serves as a hands-on field leader within PAM Health’s internal biomedical engineering team, supporting the maintenance, repair, and compliance of medical equipment across our network post-acute care hospitals, including Inpatient Rehabilitation Facilities (IRFs) and Long-Term Acute Care Hospitals (LTACHs). Reporting to the Director of Biomedical Engineering, the Lead Biomedical Engineer performs preventive maintenance (PM), troubleshoots equipment issues, supports teammates in the field, and ensures work is completed in accordance with Joint Commission, CMS, and manufacturer requirements. This role helps organize team efforts, serves as a point of escalation for complex service issues, and assists with documentation and quality control. It requires frequent travel to facilities across the country.

Responsibilities

Hands-On Field Service

  • Perform preventive maintenance, testing, and repairs on a wide range of medical equipment including patient beds, vital signs monitors, therapy equipment, suction units, infusion pumps, and more.
  • Assist with in-house service of equipment at hospitals located within accessible geographic regions.
  • Respond to urgent repair needs and support local teams in resolving high-priority service issues.
  • Troubleshoot complex equipment problems in collaboration with OEM support and clinical users.

Team Coordination & Support

  • Serve as a field lead and mentor for other Biomedical Technicians across the organization.
  • Coordinate with the Director on technician deployment and PM scheduling.
  • Provide on-site support and training to newer technicians or facility teams as needed.
  • Escalate persistent equipment or documentation concerns to leadership and assist with follow-up actions.

Compliance & Documentation

  • Ensure all work is logged accurately in the CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) or approved tracking tool.
  • Verify that PMs are completed on time and per manufacturer specs.
  • Assist with regulatory readiness, including pre-survey walkthroughs and documentation review to ensure Joint Commission compliance.

Equipment Oversight

  • Support equipment inventory tagging and audits.
  • Assist with evaluating whether equipment should be repaired, replaced, or retired.
  • Communicate with vendors on warranty issues or to order repair parts when needed.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: Degree in Biomedical Equipment Technology, Electronics, or a related field preferred.
  • Preferred Certification: CBET or other relevant certification preferred but not required.
  • Experience: Minimum 3–5 years of experience in biomedical equipment service; multi-facility or travel-based experience preferred.
  • Skills:
    • Strong working knowledge of medical devices commonly used in IRFs and LTACHs
    • Ability to read technical manuals and schematics
    • Comfortable using mobile and web-based documentation tools
    • Understanding of Joint Commission and CMS compliance standards for medical equipment

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be willing and able to travel up to 75%, including overnight stays, to support hospitals across multiple states.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
