Overview

REMOTE POSITION with 50%+ TRAVEL

The Director of Biomedical Engineering provides strategic and operational leadership for the biomedical engineering program across a multi-state, post-acute care organization, including long-term acute care hospitals (LTACHs) and inpatient rehabilitation facilities (IRFs). This role oversees a team of biomedical engineers responsible for preventive maintenance, equipment repairs, inventory tracking, and vendor coordination, ensuring compliance with Joint Commission, CMS, and regulatory standards. A key focus of this position is optimizing the company’s fixed asset tracking and leveraging technology to enhance efficiency, safety, and cost-effectiveness in medical equipment management.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a team of biomedical engineers providing services across 70+ post-acute hospitals in 22 states.
  • Ensure timely and compliant preventive maintenance (PM) of all clinical and biomedical equipment in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and Joint Commission standards.
  • Oversee repairs of equipment either through in-house resources or vendor coordination, ensuring minimal equipment downtime and prompt issue resolution.
  • Maintain a centralized and accurate fixed asset inventory of all biomedical equipment across the enterprise.
  • Implement and oversee modern technologies (e.g., RFID, barcode systems, cloud-based CMMS) for tracking, maintaining, and auditing biomedical equipment.
  • Evaluate and continuously improve internal processes and workflows for managing the enterprise-wide biomedical program.
  • Develop and monitor KPIs and performance metrics related to equipment uptime, PM compliance, repair turnaround, and inventory accuracy.
  • Ensure all biomedical practices meet or exceed Joint Commission, CMS, OSHA, and other applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with supply chain, plant operations, clinical leadership, IT, and finance to align equipment management strategy with organizational goals.
  • Manage vendor relationships for external repair services, parts procurement, and technology solutions.
  • Participate in acquisition integration, including equipment onboarding, inventory validation, and training for newly acquired facilities.
  • Maintain a robust training and competency program for biomedical engineering staff across all sites.
  • Travel to hospital locations 50%+ for oversight, training, audits, and support.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, Clinical Engineering, or a related technical field preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in biomedical engineering overseeing multi-site operations.
  • Previous experience working in a hospital or post-acute care setting required; experience with LTACH or IRF environments preferred.
  • In-depth knowledge of Joint Commission standards, CMS requirements, and national biomedical engineering best practices.
  • Demonstrated success managing asset tracking systems (e.g., CMMS, RFID).
  • Strong understanding of medical equipment life cycle management.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to travel frequently to facilities across the U.S.

 Preferred Certifications:

  • CBET (Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician) or CHTM (Certified Healthcare Technology Manager) preferred.
